What do Microsoft make laptop licenses (COAs) of?

I am bewildered.
Possibly a subtle mix of erasable ink and rice paper? Or maybe something created that is more akin to the dark arts of Valdemort and Saruman!
The number of laptops that are in for repair that need their Microsoft Operating Systems reinstalling and you flip them over and, at the very least, you can no longer read which operating system it is and at worst they have totally worn away!!

MS then insist you buy a new license. What a money spinner!

Unless, of course, we can convince the poor customer of the numerous and virus free benefits of Linux/Ubuntu etc. (see: http://www.ageek.co.uk/view_services.php?cid=3 )
